Cairns overnight media wrap, Wednesday May 17

Fraud charge, Cairns:  Police charged a 40-year-old Freshwater man yesterday following investigations into an alleged workplace theft at a CBD hotel.

It will be alleged the man was employed in an administrative capacity at the Lake Street complex and appropriated company funds for his own use between March and April this year.

Detectives attended a Freshwater address yesterday afternoon and the man was taken into custody.

He has been charged with fraud and is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court later this morning.

Deep gouges to one of the greens

Wilful damage incident, Woree:  An investigation is underway into damage caused to the Cairns golf course early yesterday morning.

Preliminary inquiries indicate that a trail bike travelled onto the course sometime between midnight and 1am yesterday morning and tore up a number of the putting greens.

The actions of the unknown rider resulted in thousands of dollars damage to the greens, with deep gouges left on the playing surface. Information suggests that the bike was then driven off the course and possibly travelled along Kowinka Street at White Rock at around 1am.

Specialist officers attended the course yesterday morning and conducted a forensic examination of the incident scene.
