Local officers awarded for bravery and commitment

Acting Sergeant Ahmed El-Mekkawi of West End Station and Constable Amy Stoneman of Dutton Park Station were two of a group of police officers recognised at a presentation held at Dutton Park Station yesterday.

Both officers were recognised for their life-and-death decision to save a woman from a brutal attack inside her South Brisbane unit last year. On November 7 2016, Acting Sergeant El-Mekkawi and Constable Stoneman responded to a Triple Zero emergency call from a distressed woman inside an apartment block.

Unable to access the complex, these officers disregarded their own safety and scaled the roof of the two-storey block to gain access to the woman, who was being held down and choked on her balcony.

Their bravery was yesterday acknowledged with the presentation of District Officer’s Certificates for their high level of commitment and professionalism.

Senior Sergeant Lee Best, Crime Manager, Riverside Patrol Group was also awarded her 25 year clasp to the Queensland Police Service Medal at the same ceremony.

Congratulations to everyone!
