Day 3 of Easter Road Safety Campaign

Motorists continue to ignore safety messages with speeding detections remaining high after day three of the Easter Road Safety Campaign.

Again more than 3,000 motorist were detected speeding yesterday consistent with the previous two days of the campaign.

In both the Airport Link Tunnel and the Legacy Way Tunnel instances of vehicles traveling at more than double the permissible speed of 80km/hour were detected. One vehicle was detected in the Legacy Way Tunnel travelling at 168km/hour and one was detected travelling at 161km/hour in the Airport Link Tunnel.

More than 8,800 drivers were randomly breath tested yesterday with 73 detected while 172 roadside drug tests were performed with 42 positive returns.

Police will continue to be out in force over the remainder of the  Easter holiday period with officers targeting drivers ignoring the Fatal Five – speeding, drink and drug driving, distraction, not wearing a seatbelt, inattention and fatigue.

The five-day operation will run from Thursday March 24 to midnight March 28.
