Approximately 8000 firearms have been processed by Queensland Police during the Firearm and Weapons Amnesty with just one week left to surrender or register weapons, without risk of penalty.

This includes restricted articles such as knuckle dusters, throwing stars and flick knives.

The general firearms and weapons amnesty period due to conclude on Tuesday, April 30.

Project manager, Inspector Peter Assfalg said until April 30, appropriately licensed members of the public can still register previously unregistered firearms through firearms dealers, armourers, firearms sporting clubs as well as police stations.

“The amnesty has been a great success as it has allowed people who are in possession of an unregistered firearm to make it legitimate without being penalised,” Inspector Assfalg said.

“Additionally, unlicensed owners can apply for a licence and anyone can surrender their unregistered firearm to be destroyed or sold to a firearms dealer.

More than 4,000 weapons have been processed to date in Queensland since the launch of the statewide weapons and firearms amnesty first took effect in February.

With less than one month until the amnesty’s completion, the community is commended for their efforts and encouraged to continue to hand back and surrender for destruction, unregistered firearms and other weapons.

Project manager, Inspector Peter Assfalg said until April 30, appropriately licensed members of the public can still register previously unregistered firearms through firearms dealers, armourers, firearms sporting clubs as well as police stations.

“The amnesty has been hugely successful to date as it has allowed people who are in possession of an unregistered firearm to make it legitimate without being penalised,” Inspector Assfalg said.

“Additionally, unlicensed owners can apply for a licence and anyone can surrender their unregistered firearm to be destroyed or sold to a firearms dealer.

“Unregistered firearms can be surrendered during the amnesty to local firearms dealers or police stations without prosecution for the possession.

Personal details or reasons for the possession may not be required,” Inspector Assfalg said.

On average, 75 weapons per day have been handed in during the amnesty. Of the 4,074 weapons presented, 786 have been surrendered for destruction, 3,237 for registration and 51 for safe keeping.

Three stolen firearms were recovered and the Amnesty Information team has received in excess of 1600 inquiries

A Firearms Amnesty Information Line was established to assist with amnesty inquiries (1300 833 548). The number is operational until April 30, 2013, Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm.

For more information, call the Firearms Amnesty Information Line on 1300 833 548 or email: firearmsamnesty@police.qld.gov.au

An upgraded version of the online computer game, Triple Zero Kids’ Challenge was launched last week by the Federal Attorney-General and Minister for Emergency Management, Mark Dreyfus, and national emergency services personnel.

The game is for primary school-aged children, aimed at educating at-risk groups on the correct use of the Triple Zero emergency number. It uses colourful, animated characters to provide lessons to children on the confident and appropriate use of Triple Zero.

Using colourful, animated characters, children learn the appropriate use of Triple Zero through various scenarios involving police, fire and ambulance services. It has now been upgraded to include an extra three scenarios that will educate players on the impact of hoax calls, what to do in major bushfires, and how to only call Triple Zero for life-threatening and emergency situations.

Children are also encouraged to play the game on their home computers, providing parents and siblings with the opportunity to deliver life-saving messages to their families.

The original Triple Zero Kids’ Challenge was played 750,000 times and users spent an average 17 minutes online each session. It has also won national and state public safety awards, has been translated into six languages other than English and has closed captions.

The game can be accessed at primary schools or at home via the website: www.triplezero.gov.au.
