Serious assault police, Mackay

Police have charged a man following an alleged assault of a police officer in Mackay early this morning.

At around 1:30am police were called to a licensed venue on Victoria Street following reports of a disturbance.

It will be alleged on arrival officers encountered a man who had been refused re-entry to the venue and who was behaving in an aggressive manner.

Police will further allege when they attempted to take the man into custody he struck one officer in the eye before being arrested.

A male constable received treatment at the scene for bruising and swelling to his eye.

A 27-year-old South Mackay man has been charged with one count each of serious assault police causing bodily harm and creating a disturbance in a licensed premises.

He is due to appear in Mackay Magistrates Court on April 14.
