Serious assault police, Mount Isa

Two Mount Isa police officers allegedly assaulted last night received treatment at hospital for injuries ranging from mild concussion, lacerations and contusions to an eye.

Police will allege that around 2.40am they were speaking to an intoxicated man at the corner of Gardner and McIntryre streets, Pioneer when he became aggressive striking out at officers.

A struggle ensued and during the arrest of the man it will be alleged that one officer was punched in the face, received two lacerations to his forehead. The second officer, who was also punched in the face, sustained a contusion and laceration to his eye.

Both male constables, aged 26 and 29, received treatment at Mount Isa Base Hospital.

An 18-year-old Winston man has been charged with two counts of serious assault police causing bodily harm, three counts of assault or obstruct police and one count of unlawfully possessing a weapon (knuckledusters).

He is due to appear in Mount Isa Magistrates Court on Monday, March 21.
