Serious assault, Gatton

Police are searching for a man after a 64-year-old woman was seriously assaulted while walking in Gatton this morning.

Around 6.45am the woman was walking along Smithfield Road when a man approached her from behind and struck her several times with a brick.

The woman fought off the man and managed to continue walking before he returned and assaulted her again.

The woman was able to raise the alarm and a male bystander intervened and assisted the woman while the man fled the scene.

The woman was transported to Toowoomba Hospital with lacerations and severe bruising to her head and face.

The man is described as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in appearance with a proportionate build, black short curly hair, dark eyes and was wearing a yellow ‘water hydration’ backpack at the time.

Investigations are continuing.
