There appears to be some confusion about the role of the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and its activities in targeting criminal gangs and criminal motorcycle gang members. Let me assure you the QPS is the operational lead in this regard and all strategies and initiatives have been instigated by the Service under the command of Deputy Commissioner Brett Pointing.
I acknowledge and thank all members of the Service for their efforts and focus on these issues in conjunction with our law enforcement partners. In addition I acknowledge the work being done by Mr Bill Mellor appointed by the Queensland Government to lead and facilitate the whole-of-government coordination of activities which includes our efforts to eliminate criminal motorcycle gangs from this State.
Mr Mellor leads the ‘Strategic Monitoring Team’ on behalf of the Queensland Government which includes high level coordination across a range of key government agencies including the QPS. The work by these agencies includes a broad range of activities including contributions from such departments as Justice and Attorney-General, Treasury and Trade and Tourism and Events Queensland.
I am pleased to work with the entire ‘Strategic Monitoring Team’ under Mr Bill Mellor’s leadership. There are facets of this fight that can only be achieved by a whole-of-government approach and we can not do this alone. I look forward to continuing to work with Bill and any other government agencies that can assist the Service to achieve our goal of eliminating criminal motorcycle gangs and their members from Queensland.
Commissioner Ian Stewart.
