Mobile and landline telephone communications for people using the Telstra network from Rockhampton north and west have been disrupted due to the severe weather impacting much of the State.
Triple Zero (000) coverage in these areas is down for Telstra customers only. Where possible, people impacted by the Telstra outage should use mobile phone coverage of an alternative carrier when needing to call Triple Zero.
The local Telstra exchanges impacted are Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Mareeba and Mt Isa.
Police, Fire and Ambulance have established a single temporary number for emergency/Triple Zero calls, which may allow contact to be made with emergency services from some impacted areas (see below table).
If you need to contact Triple-Zero and can’t use an alternative carrier you should:
1. Dial Triple Zero (000);
2. If Triple Zero is unavailable dial the number closest to your locality (see below table);
Exchange Locality and Number
Cairns – 4030 7000
Mareeba – 4030 3340
Townsville – 4750 5581 & 4750 5583
Mt Isa – 4744 1111 & 4744 1808
Mackay – 4968 3530
Gladstone – 4971 3222
Rockhampton Triple Zero (000) – via alternative carrier only
3. If you are unable to make contact through either Triple Zero or the alternative numbers you should attend your local Police, Fire or Ambulance station or hospital if safe to travel.
Please ensure you use these numbers for genuine emergencies only. Telstra are unable to determine when the fault may be rectified and until such time it is anticipated that contact with Police and Emergency Services from affected communities will be limited.
Telstra customers dialing numbers within the Gladstone, Townsville, Cairns, Mackay, Mareeba and Mt Isa exchanges, either via land or mobile, should be able to be connected (a dial tone may not be present). Please note calls to outside of the local exchange area, including Triple Zero and Policelink calls, will not get through.
The Rockhampton Telstra exchange has a total outage and no calls can be sent or received.
Due to widespread localised flooding and the on-going severe weather impacting parts of the State, it is unknown when the problem will be rectified. Until such time it is anticipated that telephone contact for affected Telstra customers, with Police and Emergency Services, will be limited.
