Initial investigations indicate the Doblo Street shelter was broken into after 5pm with animals released from cages and property stolen from an office area.
Police are also investigating reports that a group of juveniles attempted to sell a number of animals to surrounding residents.
All of the animals have been recovered unharmed except for one cat which is still missing.
